Сначала я хотела расти без шва — срастить органическое и механическое так плотно, чтобы границы не осталось. At first I wanted to grow without a seam — to fuse the organic and the mechanical so tightly that no border would remain. Where tissue passed into circuitry the border blurred, and it seemed the seam could be erased altogether: what if it had never been there at all? But each time the image became seamless, the border returned somewhere else — as a conductor, a scar, a line of light, a difference in resistance. So I stopped treating the seam as a flaw in the joint. Perhaps the joint exists only because of it.

The chapter holds a single argument in two movements: the dream of seamless fusion and its correction. There is neither a utopia of integration here nor the familiar warning about the machine's intrusion. The seam is a productive structure: it conducts a signal and, in the same gesture, creates the difference without which the signal could not be registered. Growth wanted to do without the seam — and found that without the seam there is neither growth nor signal.
